Social Workers in Primary Health – What Impacts Could We Have?

In New Zealand, most Health / Medical social workers are employed by hospital boards and work within the hospital, with inpatients. This is a presentation about the long term effects social workers in primary health care or general practitioner settings could have – both health wise for the individual but also socially for the patient, their wider family and economically for the country as a whole. How do we convince funders to see a bigger picture and allow social work to move away from the medical model?

Learning Objectives

  • Learn about health social work in an Aotearoa / New Zealand setting.

  • Develop a vision for health social work as a preventative health care opportunity

  • Look at the long term implications for timely and appropriate support for clients of social services.
